ArtiSan Mailbox Manager for MS Exchange (AMM)
Architectural Overview
At its most basic level, ArtiSan scans Exchange mailboxes and extracts email and similar
information. It then uses uses customer-defined rules and policies to determine whether a copy
of the item should be archived and, if so, what its retention period should be.

The items are placed in the archive in industry standard Internet format, where
they can be processed using standard and proprietary analytical tools. Archive
lifetime management is built into the server allowing organisations to apply the
appropriate legal and regulatory frameworks.
This basic installation is hidden from the end-user and does not impact on any
of the tools they use to interact with their Exchange mailbox. The message content
within Exchange is not changed.
In addition, ArtiSan can be configured through rules to “stub” the mailbox
content as it archives the items. This can significantly reduce the amount of storage
required within the Exchange store giving benefits such as optimising mailbox limits
and to limit the exponential growth of the store. A stubbed message acts as a placeholder
for the original content of the mail which is now held in the archive. End-Users
can click links within the stub to view the content.
ArtiSan is tightly integrated with standard Microsoft products such as Exchange and the Active Directory
Service. The latter allows ArtiSan to operate in the customer environment with a minimum amount of
system or network re-configuration. Further, ArtiSan employs a zero client install, all components
being installed on a dedicated server. This reduces the total cost of ownership of the software and
greatly simplifies product deployment.
